How to Start a Business Account on Yelp

Yelp is local business and service search engine and social network that uses a rating system based on user reviews - and it is a major tool for small businesses to be found.

If you run a local business, Yelp should be an essential cornerstone of your online presence.

You can add your business to Yelp, but chances are if you've been around a while it is already listed with no prior input from you or anyone associated with your business. In which case, "Claim This Business" will be written somewhere on the profile and you can follow the link to claim the profile and begin updating your business information. Or you can follow these first 3 steps.

This article will guide you through the process of adding your business to the Yelp search results.

  1. Go to the Yelp for Business Owners signup page.
  2. Check to see if your business is already on Yelp by entering your business name and an address that can include a specific street address, neighborhood, city, state, or ZIP/postal code. Click the “Search” button to see if your business is already listed in Yelp's search results.
  3. If there is a match for your business at your location, you can click on it and claim the profile. This will involve a verification process by phone or mail. Then you can begin updating and maintaining your business profile on Yelp.
  4. If there is no match for your business at your location, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Add your business to Yelp” link.
  5. Then proceed filling out the requested information - remember, the more you fill out, the better for your business. Make it look and sound professional. Set aside about an hour to do this so you're not rushed.
  6. When you're done filling out the information, enter your email address and click the “Add” button.
  7. Retrieve a verification email from the email address you entered when adding your business and click the link to confirm the process and add your business.
  8. Click the “View Your Business on Yelp” link to see your newly added business listing.
  9. Start promoting the page on social media platforms and your personal website.

Remember, the more information the better. Yelp is a Local Business search engine, so people searching for you live near you. They can become regular customers. They want to feel like they know you and that you are someone who will take care of their needs.
